Being There

I was given the latest Tord Gustavsen Trio album, Being There, for Christmas. I have been loving it ever since.

Gustavsen is a truly talented jazz pianist. His music is beautiful. He creates an atmosphere that you want to experience more and more, and one’s desire for such repetitive listening is rewarded by the discovery of new terms and phrases that had gone almost unnoticed before. Like his previous album The Ground I have found that at first it sounds like beautiful background music, but then it grows on me to the extent that I want to just sit back and listen to it without distraction.

I rather like Thomas Barlow’s description on the BBC website, ‘if a Zen master were to take up jazz piano, the results might sound something like Gustavsen’s work.’ His review is interesting as he is clearly not as spellbound my the album’s simple beauty as me, but fans of Tord Gustavsen Trio will, I am sure, not be disappointed with this latest creation.
