Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

I watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang last night. An enjoyable Saturday night movie. I must say I was surprised at how good this film is. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a crime film that has a classic film noir style about it. It features Robert John Downey Jr. as a crook that gets mistaken for an actor auditioning for a part in a new film. As a result he finds himself in Los Angeles working alongside a private-eye Gay Perry (Val Kilmer) as research for the film and gets embroiled in a complicated case that involves an old school friend (Michelle Monaghan) whom he’d not seen for years.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is an intelligent multi-layered film with strong performances from Robert John Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. Jr.‘s character frequently breaks the fourth-wall and provides some form of narration to push the film along, a technique that doesn’t always work, but here adds humour to the movie, which is already comic in many scenes, and adds to the stylish nature of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It is also worth mentioning the mature approach taken to Kilmer’s character whose sexuality is noted but not overplayed or stereotyped.

Overall this is a very entertaining film with an interesting, although complicated, plot. Well worth watching.
