STOMP

I went to see STOMP last night at the Sheffield Lyceum. I was looking forward to seeing this, but it was much much better than I expected it to be. STOMP make use of everyday things as instruments, such as bins, paper, brushes, even the kitchen sink! The performance was innovative, humorous, and physical. I was surprised at how funny it was, the audience was in hysterics throughout. It did start a little slow, but it soon got going. Some of the simpler pieces became a little repetitive at times, but the big ensemble pieces that made use of melodies were fantastic. I’d definitely recommend people to go and see them perform as it is a really enjoyable show and you’re unlikely to see anything else like it.

スピッツ - Sazanami

Sazanami cover art

I just got the new—well from last year—スピッツ (Spitz) album, Sazanami. I am liking it a lot so far, possibly one of my favourites alongside Mikazuki Rock.

Heath Ledger

Sad news, Heath Ledger was found dead in his apartment yesterday. He was a very talented actor who seemed to approach his work with intelligence and an open-mind. His performance in Brokeback Mountain was incredible and will bound to become the film he is most remembered for. His last film, The Dark Knight in which he plays the Joker, goes out this summer. Hopefully this final performance will leave his career on a high note.

Ashes to Ashes teaser

A teaser trailer for Ashes to Ashes has appeared! Ashes to Ashes is the follow on series from the superb Life on Mars set in 1980s’ London. I was a bit doubtful about the new series after the last one ended so well, but my mind is beginning to change as it sounds like they might actually use this new series to build on what’s gone before and raise even more questions about what Sam was actually doing in the 1970s. Best of all it looks like Gene Hunt is going to be as un-PC as ever!

Love in Thoughts

Love in Thoughts

I watched the German film Love in Thoughts yesterday. It is based on a true story about a couple of guys in the 1920s who agree on a suicide pact if they cannot achieve the love that they crave and believe they desire.

It’s an interesting film and very dark. The director appears to have used colour and lighting to reflect the changing mood of the film, with the scenes darkening as the film reaches its climax which works well. While clues to the ending are given from the opening of the movie I was a little surprised by the final outcome, although I guess if you know about the actual event this is less effective.

Overall it’s a good film, but it suffers a little from being too slow paced and uneventful at times, but it was worth watching.
